ADVENTURE DISCOVERY

Some of our most poignant moments happen in the wonder and magic of the great outdoors. As kids, we learn this early. The national Adventure Discovery model emulates this wisdom and teaches children and teens a love for the outdoors while also building positive life skills alongside peer and mentor relationships. Adventure Discovery offers workshops, excursions, institutional programming, and adventure coaching for those who are discovering their true nature—their passions, interests, and direction.

Our youth face major challenges today through many avenues impacting mental health, including substances, technology, peer pressure, and social media. In addition, kids in our culture need play, unstructured time, and fresh air for creativity, intellectual stimulation, and brain development. Furthermore, our children need time away from screens, in nature, having positive adventure experiences with others. We know, from the current science and from our decades in the field, that the evidence-based practice of experiential learning is vital to a child’s development. The value is immeasurable.

Adventure and mentorship offer a profound path to self-discovery that is clearly defined. The Adventure Discovery experience creates a lifelong love for learning and the outdoors. As a result, the AD model offers self-awareness, a vital component of personal development and substance misuse prevention. Along with individual and group activities, the Adventure Discovery approach offers clinical support from vetted, experienced professionals when advisable or deemed necessary. Our extended community of experts in the mental health and substance use fields provide exceptional support and guidance.

The empowering AD experiences impart confidence and joy. There’s nothing better than seeing others expanding their comfort zones and learning new modes of behavior and new ways to connect.

Substance Misuse Prevention

Substance use awareness, education, and prevention is a vital component of adolescence. Our participants learn how to confront challenging topics, deepen self-awareness, manage emotions, and self-regulate. In addition, kids learn new skills, spend time with their peers, and experience adventures that are transformative and inspirational. This is how memories that last a lifetime are nurtured and cultivated. The Adventure Discovery model is about teaching others the magic of time outside. When we learn how to enjoy ourselves in our daily lives, through healthful, active living, we subvert destructive thoughts and behaviors in favor of more fulfilling and productive ways of being. Therefore, when we love what we do, we move away from self-destruction and embrace life-affirming paths. Furthermore, at AR, we impart the necessary skills to feel empowered to pursue activities in the great outdoors for a lifetime. Adventures include hiking, fire ceremony, rites of passage, biking, surfing, SUP, climbing, orienteering, rafting, kayaking, camping, bushcraft skills, snowshoeing, skiing, xc skiing, and snowboarding.
