ADVENTURE RECOVERY MISSION

The Adventure Recovery mission is to guide people through the internal and external wilderness, cultivating a lifelong passion for learning and adventure.

ADVENTURE RECOVERY VALUES

Sustainability of our planet, our mental health, and our personal growth is the seed from which our values grow. We practice the art of sustainability through the following demonstrated values:

Commitment: We show up, no matter what. We understand our participants require a consistent presence in their lives. We also know that our peers rely on us to run effective, transformative programs. Walk the walk.

Compassion: We understand our participants may be struggling and their behaviors don’t always match their true desires for who they want to be. In addition, individuals may have suffered pain and trauma in the past and we honor their journey and where they are today. We provide compassionate support for where they are.

Empathy: Having lived similar experiences, we are uniquely qualified to treat participants with understanding, dignity, and respect. You are not alone. We’ve been there and found the way back through connection, vulnerability, and awareness.

Stewardship: We are part of the landscape as it is part of us. We take only what we need, always asking permission first. Leave no trace is a very important component of time outdoors and we honor this practice. We do our best to leave no trace and improve whenever possible.

Professionalism: We uphold best practices in all areas of our experiences. This is demonstrated to our participants, their families, organizations, and the community as a whole through our ongoing willingness to improve, grow, and transcend.

Integrity: We strive to be our best in every interaction, thought, and plan. We compassionately hold each other accountable. What’s more, we watch each other’s backs and do our best, always. Own it if we fall short.

Diversity: We actively encourage and promote all people, regardless of gender, race, creed, or color, to embrace an outdoor lifestyle. We are one common species living in harmony with nature. In line with this core value, we partner with like-minded organizations that serve the greater objectives of expanding access to adventure and nature.

ADVENTURE RECOVERY CODE OF ETHICS

The code outlines the beliefs, values, and practices of the Adventure Recovery organization and for those seeking and/or holding the AR Guide or AR Coach title. Our mission and values are fulfilled through adherence to codes of conduct and ethical standards that inform all that we do. These statements serve as a guide for AR Guides and AR Coaches by defining professional responsibility and ethical standards for these roles and for the organization overall.

AR Guides + AR Coaches promote wellness and mental health recovery by serving as a personal and professional adventure guides for people seeking time outdoors or for those new to or in recovery. The focus is on being an exceptional, evolving adventure guide and Adventure Recovery coaching mentor. The goal of the trainings is to teach individuals how to reach their full potential and mastery in guide, clinical, or coach capability and mentorship. To that end, AR Guides, AR Clinicians, and AR Coaches maintain high standards of ethics and personal conduct. In addition, each maintains necessary up-to-date credentials required for whatever area within which they are performing, including wilderness first aid, mental health first aid and training, climbing certifications, swiftwater rescue, just to name a few — and on.

AR Crew members are mentors, coaches, and teachers who are skilled at best practices for adventure expeditions, conscious communication, mental health awareness, and positive life skills. Our guides work collaboratively with other professionals, including clinical and therapeutic support, to find appropriate guidance for mentorship and to continue their own professional development.

An Adventure Recovery Guide, Adventure Recovery Clinician, or Adventure Recovery Coach embodies understanding and demonstrates the following through their service:

  • Everyone deserves to be treated with compassion, respect, and awareness in all situations.

  • Mentorship is the cornerstone of AR practices and while mentoring others, we will always maintain our own mentorship.

  • All individual clients and groups are unique and have special needs, goals, health attitudes, and behaviors and expectations for Adventure Recovery activities.

  • Persons in recovery from mental health challenges and substance use disorders share some similarities, however, management of their own lives and mastery of their own futures will require different pathways at times.

  • All are offered equal access to participate in their personal journey and Adventure Recovery process.

  • All persons deserve the right to privacy and confidentiality regarding their journey.

  • The focus of the relationship is for the individual being served and not for personal gain of any specific participant other than the client or group.

  • As representatives of people in recovery/discovery our actions influence how the community sees the recovery movement and we hold this in high regard, ensuring we emulate and exemplify positivity, excellence in action, compassion, inclusivity, and consideration of others.

  • We respect the cultural diversity of the people we serve.

  • We do no harm and carry hope to individuals, families, and communities.

  • Our team is on a path of self-evolution and professionalism in the outdoors, which means ensuring certifications, safety skills, and standards of professionalism are current and updated.

  • Focus on the positive – strengths, assets, and possibilities rather than problems and pathology.

  • Honor oneself and other’s potential, always.

  • You are not your diagnosis. It is simply a part of the journey.

We are honored to share the journey with our expanding community.
